Character Playlist

I didn’t manage to get out a post yesterday since things have been crazy lately and I’ve been dealing with a chronic pain issue. However, I want to repost one of my guests posts that seemed very popular with the first book but was mainly missed this time–the musical playlist for Derwin and Elliot. Also, here are the rest of the links to the blog tour stops, including another guest post where I go into detail about the yokai featured in the world of the Oddities.

Character Playlist

During my blog tour for the first Oddities book, Murder Once Seen, I included a post about the playlists for Derwin and Elliot and talked about how I use music in my writing. Readers enjoyed the playlists, so I’m doing it again for Book 2, Fraud Twice Felt. In the first book, Derwin and Elliot were separate entities with different tastes in music, so I had a playlist for each, based on music they might like, music that inspired me during the writing, or music that I felt fit the journeys the characters were on.

This time when I started thinking about a playlist, I found I could no longer separate the two boys. They’ve merged into a couple. Therefore, I have only a single playlist of songs that I think best fit this book and the boys. The songs give clues into the characters, the plot of the book and the feel of the series. I typically don’t have the luxury of actually writing to music, but I still listen to music while plotting ideas, often while driving in the car. I love how lyrics can fit in perfectly with a character’s situation.

So here’s my playlist:

Fraud Twice Felt Playlist

  1. Best Day of My Life – American Authors
  2. Addicted to You – Avicii
  3. I’m Still Standing –Elton John
  4. Prevent This Tragedy – Alkaline Trio
  5. Megalomaniac – Incubus
  6. Respect – Aretha Franklin
  7. This is War – 30 Seconds to Mars
  8. Murder City – Green Day
  9. Demons – Imagine Dragons
  10. Lay Your Hands on Me – Bon Jovi
  11. Follow Me – Muse
  12. Summertime – MCR

I’ll leave it to readers to figure out how those songs tie in to the characters and plot of the book—this time I’ve included a song or two that pertains to secondary characters, particularly the gang leader Roy Yoshiro, who features prominently in the book.

I hope readers enjoy these songs, and I hope they enjoy reading the continued adventures of Derwin and Elliot in Fraud Twice Felt.

Playlists and writing

I’ve often talked with other writers about what music they listen to when they’re writing.

I don’t always get to listen to music–sometimes I’m hurrying to get a paragraph or two written during my breaks at work on my Surface tablet. I also don’t always want music, particularly if it is a difficult scene where I have to pay attention to details rather than emotions.

However, on some projects I do create playlists to help me get into the mood to write emotionally packed scenes. I’ve noticed some characters more than others seem to demand their own music.

That’s the case with my latest project First, I’ve renamed it–the series will now be called “The Oddities Series” and the first book will be named “Murder One.” Each book will be titled with a different crime, but that one fit the first book perfectly. I’ve already shown my visions of what the two main characters look like, but now I’m learning their musical tastes as well.

Elliot seems to like Emo and Punk. Derwin, on the other hand, tends to go for solid 70’s rock. He also likes musicals like Les Mis, of all things. Go figure.

So among some of the songs I’ve been downloading lately, here are several:

  • Soundtrack to Moulin Rouge (that was Derwin’s fault)
  • 17 Crimes by AFI
  • Bulletproof Heart by MCR (actually I love them anyway so I bought the album, “Danger Days”.)
  • My Songs Know What You Did In the Dark by Fall Out Boy (I also have another album by them)
  • Dream On, by Aerosmith (Derwin again)
  • Angel, by 30 Seconds to Mars (full album on my wish list)
  • Little Girl, by Green Day (Already have this–I have every Green Day song ever made because they’re my favorite band)
  • Thunderstruck by AC/DC (Derwin)
  • Black Betty by Ram Jam (Derwin)
  • Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas (Derwin)
  • Resistance, by Muse (already had this one but I want their latest album)

So how many others out there create playlists, I wonder?
